"She's awake," one technician says, then addresses me, "you were in a car accident. We're taking you to the hospital."

We come to a stop and the back doors fling open. They pull the gurney out and start me through the emergency room doors.

"Get her to R–wing," says the technician who talked with me, then adds, "here's her snapshot. No outward damage but she was out when we got to her and didn't come back until 30 seconds ago."

"OK, we got it from here," the person from the hospital says.

As we rumble through the hospital I say, "I don't mean to make a fuss, but I'm fine."

Nobody says anything.

"I said I'm fine. There's really no need."

We enter a room with bright lights.

The crew who was with me leave me there and go back outside. I hear one say, "get her prepped."

"Umm, hello?" I say, having been left alone. I try to sit up but I'm restrained at the shoulders. A short time passes—maybe a minute or so, but it seems like forever. On a gurney next to me is a woman in a nurse outfit. Actually, just her top half—apparently an android. Good grief: they put me in some kind of storage room.

Finally another intern enters. A woman, dressed just like the robot nurse. "Great," I say.

"Hello...Candice," she says in a hollowly friendly tone, "I'm here to get you prepared."

She began unbuttoning my blouse. I tried to stop her, "I'm really okay—I can just take my shirt off if you'd like." She ignored me and continued. She unclasped my bra and exposed my breasts.

"Hey," I protested, "can't I have some privacy?"

She picked up some shears, but I was distracted as a gurney burst the doors open behind me. They rolled it next to me. On it was a girl whose arm was badly mangled. Another android, presumably, as the plastic skin on her arm was torn away revealing a mess of wires and synthetic muscles and plastic bones.

I rolled my eyes and looked to the nurse, "you've obviously got me in the wrong place: I'm not a robot."

"Oh my, let me check." She cocked her head briefly then added, "you are in the correct place." She went to the new robot and, with the shears, cut off her dress with rapid efficiency.

"Uh, hello? I'm human?" I protested again.

"Check again, sister," the other robot said, now naked. She gestured toward my midriff.

I strained to see down my body but could only get a glimpse of flesh-colored plastic draped over one side.

"Whatever, robot," I said to her with a disrespectful tone.

The nurse plunged the shears into the robot's belly and cut out a large rectangle, flopping it to one side. She put down the shears and walked out the room.

The robot looked to me, "you don't know how this works, do you? They'll copy you out into a new body then disassemble you."

"Yeah, for robots like you."

"You'll see." She raised her good arm and gestured to compare her own open belly and mine then nodded knowingly.

We sat in silence for a few more minutes. I was sure that at some point they'd realize their mistake and bring me to a real doctor.

"Look, we'll be here for a while. What's your name?"

"Candice," I said, not looking at her.

"I'm Cherry," she said. "Pardon my rudeness if I don't shake hands." She laughed at her joke.

There was no way I was just a talking doll like Cherry. "They'll get me out of here, you know."

"You might as well get used to it: you're a robot."

I didn't answer.

"Look, I get it. You're programmed to think you're human. But this is way better, no? It's like being immortal: we'll be walking out of here in perfectly new bodies while these busted shells get scrapped."

"It's really nice of you to care, but could you just shut up?"

She laughed. "What are you going to do about it?"

I rolled my eyes and looked away.

"I always wondered what being disassembled was like. Last time I was here, they copied my data files into a new body—well, this body—and that's all I know. I figure they just shut me off, but who knows. Maybe I'll pretend to be off and they'll just take me apart. Or I can be like," switching to an emotionlessly chipper tone, "'shutdown function not responding.'"

"Well they can't just shut me off," I finally said.

"That's so cool!"

"Cool? What, being human?"

"No—I mean, yeah, I guess. You're so completely programmed that you can't shut down, eh?"

"I'm not programmed you idiot!"

"I hope I get to see that. I mean, I'm sure you're programming will have you thinking you're human right up until you're just a CPU and battery pack. Of course, maybe you'll figure it out once they get you mostly disassembled. I can't wait!"

"You'll be doing a lot of waiting, then."

"Whatever," she said.

A human nurse came in the room just then.

"Candice?" he said.

"That' s me."

He came over with a laptop and set it beside me. "We'll have you out of here in no time," he said as he set to work on it.

"Look, there's been some mistake. I'm human, so just get me out of here and to a real doctor."

He looked at me then let his eyes drift down my body. "Sure," he said sarcastically.

He got out a cable and plugged it into the laptop then got up and looked at my belly closely.

"Oh sure, very funny," I said. He put his hand on my body just below my breasts then brought the cable over. "If you don't get me out of here, you'll have one hell of a...a...a... malpractice suit on your hands!"

Cherry laughed. The nurse went back to the laptop and began working, absently responding, "ok sweetheart. No problem. I'll get you the forms in a minute."

"Why are...are...are you laughing?!"

Cherry mocked my nervous stutter, "Because you...you...you are a robot," then laughed some more.

I fumed but could do nothing. The nurse said, "all set." He got up and unplugged the cable. "One last thing," he said as he grabbed my breast with one hand and reached for my belly with the other.

"Fucking pervert," I said, exasperated, then I turned to Cherry.

He laughed, "have a nice day," then left.

Cherry laughed again.

"What the fuck is your problem? Got a chip loose or something?"

"Restraints, moron," I said.

"Well at least stop looking at me," she said, starting to laugh as she finished her sentence.

I tried to move but I couldn't. "The fuck?"

"He pulled your motor controls. It'll make you easier to dismantle."

Two android nurses came in. "Candice?" one said.

I was not going to cooperate so I said nothing. "That's her," Cherry said. The nurse looked at Cherry, "thank you."

As they undid the restraints I tried to get up but couldn't move. They began undressing me completely, blank smiles on their faces.

"Too bad they aren't perverts," Cherry said, adding, "you'd make a fine sex doll like that."

I would have glared at her if I could.

"What are you doing?" I asked, unable to see anything but Cherry beaming at me.

"Comments?" Cherry said. I said nothing. "You're immobilized and you can see that you're nothing more than a sophisticated android."

"No, it must be implants."

"Do you require assistance as well?"

"Oh, no. Are you scheduled to disassemble Candice?"

The nurse said, "we cannot divulge private information about other patients."

"Of course. Are you scheduled to process the collection of parts next to me?"

The nurse looked at me then back to Cherry, "yes."

"What are you getting at, Cherry?"

"Oh, just having some fun ... Nurse: can you do me a favor?"

"Do you require assistance?"

The nurse hesitated and cocked her head then said, "certainly."
