Westworld is a 1973 American science-fiction Western thriller film written and directed by Michael Crichton.

Presentation

The movie takes place in the then-future year of 1983 in Delos, a high-tech and highly realistic amusement park staffed with humanoid robots practically indistinguishable from human beings. The park is divided in three parts: Western World (the American Old West), Medieval World (medieval Europe), and Roman World (the ancient Roman city of Pompeii). In these, guests may indulge in any adventure with the android population of the park, including sexual encounters and simulated fights to the death. Eventually, the park as a whole begins to malfunction, with androids refusing guests' advances and hurting them. The technicians running Delos are incapable of resolving the situation, as the system is extremely complex and partly designed by other machines. The film's protagonist, Peter Martin, is pursued by an android gunslinger he had defeated the day before but that has returned, according to the park's nightly reset - with the exception that the robot now shoots to kill. Eventually, he manages to defeat the gunslinger and escape the park.

A sequel, Futureworld, was released in 1976. A TV series that ignored the 1976 movie, Beyond Westworld, was broadcast in 1980 but was cancelled after airing three episodes out of five produced. In 2016, a TV series of the same name, with 26 episodes produced and an ongoing third season as of April 2020.
