You restrain yourself from answering Pamina’s plaintive cries as you venture into the temple to find her. The acoustics provide little hint of where her sweet voice is calling from, and the dark passages before you are all designed to return you to the center of the stage.
As you emerge from yet another twisting corridor, you see the doll-like attendant distinguished by the black lace choker around her slender neck, her hands clasped at her ivory bosom. “You are trapped, alone, in this place of horror! Why do you seek to prove your love to the wicked Sarastra?” She circles you, singing softly, “Call to Pamina and return her to her mother!”
