An android is a robot that looks and acts like a human. A male can be referred to as an android while a female can be referred to as a gynoid. However, the term "android" is usually understood to apply to all genders.
In fiction, an android is typically a robot which looks and behaves as close to a human as possible, with skin, hair, and proper male or female anatomies. This differentiates them from the classical robot, which may crudely resemble males or females, but with metal skin or appendages and an overall mechanical appearance.
Real androids
The Actroid and EveR-1 are widely considered to be among the first real androids produced. They still lack certain characteristics that fictional androids have, such as autonomous locomotion.
