League of Legends is a 2009 multiplayer battle arena in which players must capture the opponent's base using a character referred to as a "champion". Each champion has unique abilities and play styles, and a champion needs to obtain items and experience points to get strong enough to defeat the opponent's defenses. Whoever destroys the "Nexus", a large structure on the opponent's side, wins.

Basic Lore

The world of League is called "Runeterra", a land of magic, technology, and magic technology. The basic premise is that Runeterra used to be in constant warfare until a council of powerful magicians, known as Summoners, forced everyone to stop the Rune Wars and instead fight in tournament matches to resolve disputes. If two countries have a problem that cannot be resolved politically, each will choose a champion to represent them in Field of Justice.

The current two major factions are Demacia and Noxus. Of the remaining political forces, their beliefs clash most violently, and the two parties make frequent use of the Fields of Justice and have fielded countless champions to resolve their differences through proxy wars. In addition, various minor factions, such as Piltover, Zaun, Ionia, Freljord, and Bilgewater, ally themselves with the major factions and each other to settle personal political differences. In addition, outside forces, most prominently the Void and Shadow Isles, also field champions, though for sinister reasons all of their own. Completely independent warriors have also been drafted or volunteered for the process.

Because each nation has widely differing levels of advancement, to ensure no one faction has a major technological or mystical advantage, summoners from the Institute of War places limiters on all participants to ensure equal power among participants. This ensures that a pirate with a blunderbuss is competitively viable against a cop with a sniper rifle, and it also enables a rat with a blowgun to outmatch an elder god of infinite destruction through wits alone.

All told, the lore of League of Legends is enormously complex, owing to the dedication and prowess of the writing staff. To properly ascertain the true extent, please visit the wiki on the subject:

Gameplay

The typical game features a 5v5 match in which players are expected to work together to destroy the enemy base by strengthening their champions and engaging opponent champions and enemy minions in combat. Depending on the players, two types of matches can occur.

Casual

In a casual game, players are put on teams based on rankings and filters. As a result, skill level, competency, and even basic team composition can vary wildly between games. Because LoL is a free-to-play games, there are inevitably a lot of teenagers and small children playing the game alongside adults. While some games can go off without a hitch, at the very worst, rounds will devolve into 5v9 matches in which 4 teammates will act as especially vindictive opponents towards one another. In the early 2010s, matches of the latter category were especially prevalent, with LoL famously known as the game that every long-time fan warns newcomers to not play. However, in the later half of the 2010s, owing to the release of games like MInecraft, Overwatch, and Fortnite, many of the truly awful players have moved on to annoy people somewhere else, leaving the current playerbase still rough around the edges, but still tolerable as long as new players understand the metagame. Speaking of the metagame...

Competitive

The current iteration of League of Legends is famous mainly for its prevalence in eSports. As one of the first to make eSports mainstream, many professional players can and do make a living training for widely broadcasted matches. For this reason alone, Leage of Legends continues to be a major force in the gaming industry for the foreseeable future.

Fembot Relevance

The main technological force of Runterra is Hextech. Many champions feature prominent Hextech augmentations, with others being complete mechanical creations. Outside of canon lore, the developers and artists have been known to create alternate skins featuring mechanical reimaginings of various champions.
